The place of portrait in the art of painting of 20th century

It is aimed to indicate the progress that portrait and self-portrait has made from past to present in this work in which to what extent portrait took place in the 20th century artistic movements is researched. Stages that the portrait underwent through the art movements of the period were emphasized with this study in which the approaches to the portrait in painting were investigated as well as their contributions to the art of 20th century.First of all in this study, it is aimed to be given how the artistic progress of portrait came into being in the process from Fayyum portraits until 20th century by being supported with the artists and their works of art. In the story of the investigation of human face; the facial expressions are conveyed according to the historical periods in which changes have been experienced. The progress that portrait has made is emphasized with this study in which cultural and socioeconomic structures of the age are also taken into consideration.The functional properties of portrait are handled in accordance with the artistic movements and style occured in 20th century. The features that occured depending on the innovations that portraits of 20th century brought to the art of painting are studied considering the historical development of portrait. In this study, how the formal expressions and plastic items are handled and the rules of practice in portrait are investigated. Accordingly, how the features and the formal expressions in these portraits are used between the movements of art and whether they set an example between each other is compared.It is investigated to indicate how effective were the portraits on the existing movements of art from Fovism to Hyperrealism. The contributions that the studies of portrait have on the movements and the styles are mentioned considering the factors that form the basis of the movements of art. The importance that artists gave to portraits in their works are explicated by handling the movements individually. The techniques which were used by those of the artists who built their understanding of art on portrait are also included.As being the period of change with both its artists and the movements as well as portraits, in 20th century, those artists who were prominent with their works of portraits in the movements and at schools from visual and intellectual perspective and their works are researched. The place of the innovations which were brought into the art of painting by the artists of portrait and their influence on the contemporary world of art is also focused on with the light of the information obtained from this research. The descriptive informations about the portraits that are handled from the different frameworks of the movements and artists with different understandings are given with the pictures.The treatment of the problem of reality in the portraits of this century are researched and how this was reflected on the works are focused on this study. The impact of the understandings of reality on the development and change is emphasized, as well. Finally, there has been given a place to the researches which show in what way the portraits of 20th century made contribution to the art of painting. In this study, the researches are given in chronological order; the parts in which artists have been investigated are supported with the visual images of portraits.
