The relationship between ethics and aesthetics in Turkish cinema of 2000s: Ethical criticsm of "Three Monkeys", "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" and "Wild Pear Tree"

The close connection of art to mankind demonstrates its relationship to ethics and ethical values. Questioning the meaning of being human and the quality of human relationships, ethics studies morality. It is possible to find ethical information about humanity and life in art works. The relation of art to ethical values results in identifying the value of "beauty" with "good" and "truth". This leads art works to take a structured form. Form, is the materialization of a certain conception of the world and a certain moral sentiment connected to it. Along with modernism, a new way of life and the new sense of reality have led new art forms. Modern art arranges its aesthetical components allowing an ethical questioning. This questioning can also be seen in modern cinema. Having the contemporary film narration structure, modern cinema attempts to break the illusion of reality, which is also the ideology of cinema itself and a feature of classical cinema. Modern cinema, with this kind of a counter-aesthetic, offers the audience new ways of perception and allows for an ethical assessment. It can be claimed that this approach can mainly be observed in Turkish cinema in 2000s. It is possible to see that ethical values are questioned and this affects the film aesthetic, particularly in nonpopular films. Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films can be good examples for this. This study, which discusses the relationship between ethical and aesthetical values in Turkish cinema of 2000s, analyses sample films, "Three Monkeys", "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia" and "Wild Pear Tree", trying to demonstrate this relationship using ontological analysis method and ethical criticism.
