Assessment of work accidents occured in metal sector in ankara 2009

This study is a type of complementary research assessing the work accident reports which were drafted by the Labor Inspectors of Ministry of Labor and Social Security as a result of work inspections performed in metal sector in Ankara, 2009.The nature of the study consists of 204 work accidents in sum which took place in metal sector in Ankara from a total number of 8084 inspection reports drafted by the Labor Inspectors (technical) of Ministry of Labor and Social Security in 2009. Out of 204 work accidents, all of the accident reports were investigated without performing any sampling.From the work accident inspection reports drafted as a result of the work accident investigations performed by the Labor Inspectors of Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the information gather by the help of ?Metal Sector Work Accident Investigation Form? which consists of two chapters and a total of 15 questions, was entered into the computer and assessed.As a result of the study, the mean age of the workplaces where the work accidents of metal sector took place, was determined as 9,15±8,53. Approximately 72% of the accidents was found to happen in workplaces employing less than 50 workers. 37% of 206 workers experienced work accidents were under the age of 30. Out of 206 victims, 53.3% were graduates of elementary school, 35.0% secondary school, 10.7% vocational training and 1.0% were graduates of higher education. Lack of education (28.6%), not using personal protective equipment (22.2%), lack of inspection-audit-control (23.5%) were the leading most effective reasons observed in the course of accidents. Due to these reasons, the employers were found to be guilty by more than 50%. As a result of the work accidents, 63.6% (131 workers) of the workers were injured, 31.6% (65 workers) suffered loss of limb, whereas 4.9% (10 workers) died.The most effective way of fostering the awareness of OHS and spreading the culture of security within the society is training of early age. Given the fact that most of the workers are graduates of elementary school, placing security classes in the curriculum of elementary schools would be beneficial for forming the security culture within the society by the time.Detailed analysis of accidents take place in workplaces and sharing these analyses with the workers and the employers will keep their attention to the topic fresh, increase the level of awareness and will contribute to reduce the number of work accidents and their negative effects.
