Women's representation in films produced by women in Turkish cinema between 2010-2020: A feminist analysis

This study analyzes films in post-2010 Turkish cinema, the screenwriters and directors, and protagonists of which are women. This analysis is based on one of the basic concepts of feminist theory, i.e. "gender", and on a concept of feminist film theory, i.e. "scopophilia". To understand whether gender and scopophilia are reproduced or eliminated in these films, the study looks into the representation of women in the public and private sphere; experiences of solidarity and/or competition among women; women's resistance and/or acceptance of unequal, disadvantaged, secondary, oppressive and exploitative conditions; women's experiences of oppression or liberation; the position of the camera in cinematography; and the presence or absence of the scopophilic perspective. The study also traces the potential for the existence of a "women's cinema" in Turkish cinema. In the study, the selected films are analyzed as qualitative cases, and the answers to research questions are sought and interpreted in the films. These findings are expected to contribute to the literature, in terms of revealing the women's perspective in Turkish cinema.
