Semiotic analysis of designs of book covering of Iliad and Odyssey published between 2014 and 2019 in Turkey

The book, which is one of the products of non-periodical publication, has taken its current form from the invention of writing to the development periods of paper, with the invention of the printing press and the development of technology from the past to the present. Studies in this area are improving by increasing the production of books. Book covers are windows that communicate with their readers and give the first information about the content of the book. Book cover designs, which are important in this context, are made by artists by adhering to graphic principles and elements. Humans communicated with the environment, recorded what they saw and started in the period of Neanderthals in order to convey information to those who came after them. Icons are invented to communicate. These produced symbols are perceived and interpreted by the sense of sight. These interpreted symbols turn into information. Throughout history, people who needed to store and transfer information invented writing, and these writings were first transferred to clay tablets and then to papyrus and parchment. Later, with the invention of cellulose-based paper, information transfer became easily portable. In order for these papers containing information to last and protect for a long time, volumes called codex were invented. With the development of binding types and printing machines over the years, it has become easy to add text and visuals to book covers, The book cover has turned into areas on which design is made. The main purpose of the book cover design is; It is to enable the reader to establish a direct relationship with the book cover and to establish the first link about the content of the book. In line with the main purpose of the research, the typography, visual elements (photograph, illustration, drawing) designs used in the book covers of Iliad and Odyssey published in Turkey in 2014-2019 were analyzed by semiotic analysis method. This analysis is analyzed using Ferdinand de Saussure's sign-signifier-signified-schemas. In this research, it is predicted that the book cover designs examined with semiotic analysis are important in terms of being an example for the researches within the scope of the subject and contributing to this field.
