Examination of the visuals in the grade 4 social sciences book for the 2021-2022 education term in terms of meaning

Textbooks are among the resources that students always carry with them and that they can access information immediately when needed. For this reason, the visual elements used in the textbooks are one of the most effective ways for the student to receive the desired message. The aim of this research is to examine the visuals in the 2021-2022 education period 4th grade social sciences book in terms of visual design principles. This research, which was carried out in the descriptive survey model, is a qualitative study based on document review. The research consists of examining the visuals in the 4th grade social studies textbook in terms of visual design principles. Rubrics developed by Şahin (2014) were used as data collection tool in the research. In order to ensure the validity of these rubrics, opinions were taken from 6 experts working at different universities and evaluated by 3 field experts. After this stage of the research, the textbooks were evaluated independently according to the rubrics and the arithmetic average of the scores given was taken. The rubrics used in the data collection tools were prepared with 1-5 options. There are 7 units in the 2021-2022 academic year 4th grade social sciences textbook. Visual elements and texts were selected from each unit and evaluated according to the specified rubric. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the textbook is generally suitable for visual design principles.
