Sustainable 21st century green museum strategies and current examples

The most important innovation added to the new museum concept that developed in the 19th century is the role of the museum in social development. The biggest problem of the 21st century is the global climate crisis. In this context, the necessity of museums to be an example to society has come to the fore. The power of museums on society today is that 21st century museums must raise awareness in society, be effective and educational, in accordance with their role in climate action. Museums should follow a green and sustainable path, starting from the design stage. Existing museums should implement environmentally friendly changes in their structures as much as possible and strive to become carbon-neutral museums. Green Building Certifates, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, The Paris Agreement, United Kingdom The National Museum Directors' Council Museum COP and Bizot Green Protocol, should guide museums to become more ecofriendly, green and sustainable. Museums develop and implement strategies within the scope of architecture, management, operation, permanent and temporary exhibitions, with a holistic approach to the global climate crisis. The measures taken by museums against sustainability projects and the global climate crisis were researched by selecting museums with different characteristics. In this study, examples of museums developed with these certificates are given. Panorama 1326 Bursa Fetih Museum, Tokyo Miraikan The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts, Rotterdam DEPOT Boijmans van Beuningen are examined on the basis of their Green Museum approaches, applied strategies similarities. Artists active in ecology; Agnes Denes, Joseph Beuys, Olafur Eliasson's work of arts and environmentalist activist formations such as Liberate Tate, on museums have been mentioned. It has been concluded that in order to enable 21st century museums to be successful in climate action and Green Museum, it is necessary to work interdisciplinary and create a Green Museum Guide in the light of the data collected from museums.
