Transcript and evaluation 238th Seydişehir (Konya) Sharia Record

Sharia records that has been beginning in the mid-century of XV., till the period until the first quarter of the XXth century, which is one of the primary sources held in a large part of the Ottoman Empire. These sources comprises, military, cultural, social and economic structure of the societies besides the political history. The Sharia records are also of great importance in research on cities' history. Official correspondences of the Cadis (muslim judges) with the center, complaints and wishes of the people, fermans (edicts) and provisions, that it is not possible to obtain information about the political, administrative and social history of the Ottoman Empire without examining the court decisions that give us valuable information about the social and economic life of the region to which we belong. Because the Sharia records are so wide in scope, they are the only source to be searched for many issues to be investigated. Writings on the subject of the Sharia courts were written according to certain rules. The divisions in which the regional subjects are written are called the "Sicili Mahfuz" (Protected Registry), while the division from which the orders from the center are written is called the "Sicili Mahfuz Defterü" (Protected Registry Book). In this study, I examined Seydişehir (Konya) Sharia Record (Julian 1318- 1922 Gregorian 1903-1922) number 238. These records are made up of deputation deeds. The registers I work on include various topics, but mainly about heritage, holdings and marriage. In the record, there are usually controversial issues related to the litigation issue, or proxy issues regarding matters such as transfer, sale or transfer, sale, etc. are subject to the process of giving deputation. This study contains important information on the social, cultural, economic and historical aspects of the region.
