Abstract (EN)

Though there had been some attempts in bringing a Multi-Party System in Turkey such as the establishments of The Progressive Republican Party and the liberal Republican Party between the years 1923-1945, The Turkish Republic had not achieved success in transition into multi-party political system. As soon as the negative atmosphere and the conditions of The World War II were over, İsmet İnönü, The National Chief smoothed the way for the establishment of a new political party by the speech he made on 19th May 1945stating that new steps could be covered towards democracy. A group of four members of the parliament, namely Adnan Menderes, Celal Bayar, Fuat Köprülü and Refik Koralta nestablished Democrat Party leaving CHP (Republican People's Party). The Democrat Party remained as the opposition party until 1950 pursuing a moderate policy. In doing so, the party had been influential in the establishment of multi-party democracy in Turkey. Moderate opposition of the Democrat Party has contributed to maintain non-party bureaucrats and democratization such as secret ballot-open counting. In 1950 elections, Democrat Party won 408 chairs whereas Republican People's Party won only 69. The independents had 9 seats. In this respect, it can be claimed that Democrat Party enjoyed a landslide victory in the 1950 elections. Political History of Turkey was marked by Democratic Party between the years 1950-1960. However, the party'santi-democratic practices, both authoritarian and repressive attitude together with the hostility against the military led to the Coup on 27th May 1960. The members of the National Unity Committee who had come together in order to overthrow Democrat Party government started to have conflicts in between. As a result, fourteen members of the Committee were sent into exile by the rest and the referred historical incidence was called as "the fourteens case" afterwards. Key Words: The fourteens, exile, dissociation
