The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of 3 contemporary retreatment systems when used for the retreatment performed by utilizing 3 methodologies. 90 extracted human teeth with single roots were selected. Teeth were separated from their crowns under water cooling by using a diamond separator and their root lengths were adjusted to 16 mm. Root canal preparation of the specimens was performed using Hyflex EDM Nickel-Titanium rotary instruments. The 90 samples were divided into 3 groups of 30 and filled with the following methods: Group 1: Calamus Dual 3D Systems + AH Plus Root Canal Sealer Group 2: Thermafil Obturators + AH Plus Root Canal Sealer Group3: Lateral Condansation +AH Plus Root Canal Sealer The groups were further divided into 3 subgroups, consisting of 10 teeth and 3 different retreatment procedures were conducted as follows: A. Protaper Universal System D Series (n:10) B. Wave One Gold System (n:10) C. XP-endo Retreatment System (n:10) Grooves were created on the samples in the bucco-lingual direction by using a double-sided diamond disc and sectioning was performed longitudinally using a chisel. Root halves were examined under dental operating microscope at X 15 magnification and images were transferred to an image analysis software (Autocad 2004; Microsoft, Redmond, Washington, USA) to calculate residual filling material as well as walls of root canal. The remaining filling material in root canal walls (A) was calculated by the formula: A = (area of the remnant · 100)/area of the root canal. The results showed that no system was able to entirely clean canal filling material. When area of remaining filling material was compared in the Calamus group, no statistically significant was determined between the Protaper Universal Retreatment System, WaveOne Gold system and XP-Endo system. In Thermafil group, no significant difference was determined between PTUR, WaveOne Gold system and XP-Endo systems. In the lateral condensation group, a statistically significant difference was determined between PTUR system and WaveOne Gold. The residual filling in Protaper system was significantly higher in comparison to WaveOne Gold. When the amount of filling material was compared between methodologies, a significant difference was found between Calamus and Thermafil. The residual filling in Calamus group was found to be significantly higher compared to Thermafil.When all the groups were compared with each other using multiple comparisons, PTUR system in teeth whose filling was performed with Calamus resulted in significantly higher amount of filling material in comparison to PTUR in teeth filled with Thermafil and retreatment using WaveOne Gold in teeth filled with lateral condensation. Conclusion: Further studies are necessary which not only assess innovative systems but also hybrid techniques which incorporate the combined usage of instruments to draw more reliable conclusions.
