Analytical investigation of damaged reinforced concrete buildings in Izmir Seferihisar Earthquake on October 30, 2020

Abstract (EN)

Our country has been faced with many earthquakes in recent years. Deficiencies in compliance with and implementation of existing regulations, factors such as uncontrolled manufacturing and material use have caused losses of life and property in earthquakes. Especially the transition period from the old regulations to the modern regulations has been full of difficulties in terms of building safety. Common problems seen after earthquakes include soft floor effect, torsional irregularity, adhesion and clamping problems, structural weaknesses such as heavy and closed console insufficient use of curtains and floor problems are important. This study includes performance analyses of structures with similar characteristics that completely collapsed one block as a result of the 30 October 2020 Izmir Seferihisar earthquake and the other block survived the earthquake undamaged. Reinforced concrete structures called A and B blocks are located in the Bayraklı district of Izmir. These structures are exactly the same in terms of geometry, year of construction, workmanship and material properties. As a result of the investigations carried out after the earthquake, it was determined that the A block structure was undamaged, but the B block structure was destroyed. A block, unlike B block, has a 5-column ledge on the ground floor. With the ETABS program, nonlinear time definition area analyses were performed using real earthquake acceleration records taken from the nearest station to the structure and shape changes were checked. In addition, the performance level of the A block structure was determined with 11 earthquake acceleration records selected and scaled according to TBDY 2018 with the Finite element program. The results show that the Izmir Seferihisar earthquake did not create accelerations capable of destroying these structures. The fact that the block A structure was not demolished is also a proof of this. It has been determined that the B block structure was destroyed due to manufacturing errors and structural irregularities. Weak floor irregularity, soft floor irregularity, heavy/closed exits, short column effect, etc. present in the structures. it is understood that many defects caused the wholesale migration of the B block structure.
