Abstract (EN)
This analyzes the districts of Edirne, Dimetoka, Ferecik, Ipsala, Cisr-I Ergene, Kizilagac and Kesan of the Right Wing of Pasha Sanjacks based on the tahrir register 494. As a result of this analysis, it can be seen that there are traces of the settlement policy implemented by the Ottoman Empire through the conquest of these districts, both in urban and rural areas. There are many residential areas that had been named after the people who have worked towards the development and settlement of these districts. According to the records, there are 326 villages in these districts, of which 107 of Dimetoka, 65 of Edirne, 45 of Kizilagac, 38 Ferecik, 27 of Ipsala, 26 of Cisr-i Ergene and 18 of Kesan. The highest number of rural settlements has been found in Dimetoka, whereas the least populated areas appear to be in Kesan. Within the overall number of villages, 211 of the villages were mainly populated by Muslims as opposed to 71 of which were mainly populated by Christians; however, 44 of the villages were shared both by Muslims and Christians. The number of the recorded taxpayers of the rural areas was 11072, in which 7882 of them were Muslims and 3190 were Christians. Although there were 44 villages where Muslims and Christians lived together, it can be said that they, in fact, they did not mingle their residential areas.Based on the information in the tahrir register studied, it is possible to say that there is a correlation in the villages between the religious dominancy and the number of people who belong to a certain religion. All told, there are 27 hamlets in the districts of the Right Wing of Pasha Sanjaks. The closest villages farmed 9 of these hamlets and 18 of them were substantive fields. It is documented that there are farmer communities in some of these hamlets. The even numbers of istilah implies the number of the people who farmed the fields not the fields? itself. Therefore the number of farms could not be determined based on this information. However, this information enables us to identify that the taxpayers who farmed these lands helped the fields stay unified under the same governorship. The big farms were conferred as kilic timari. Some of these farms were farmed by sipahi himself and some of them were farmed by the villagers on behalf of sipahi. The means of livelihood in the villages were agriculture, animal husbandry and various occupations in service sector. There are 211 neighborhoods in city centers: 166 in Edirne, 21 in Dimetoka, 14 in Ipsala, 8 in Ferecik and 2 in Kizilagac. There is no evidence that Kesan and Cisr-I Ergene did not have city centers, yet some of their villages were considered as ?centers.?It?s stated that there are 3899 taxpayers in the neighborhoods. 2766 of these taxpayers were Muslims, 719 of them were Christians and 414 of them were Jews. There is no evidence that the Muslims and Christians lived together in these neighborhoods, expect for the one neighborhood in Kizilagac. Means of livelihood in the urban areas appear to be in trade, industry and service sector. Edirne is, Having said that, according to the tahrir books, there were also public houses and open markets for wholesale in Edirne. Additionally, there were candle houses, boza houses, oil mills and butcheries in Edirne.Key Words:1.Tahrir Register2.Rumeli3.Edırne4.Dımetoka5.Ferecik6.Ipsala7.Kesan8.Cısri Ergene9.Kızılagac10.Right Wing11.Pasha Sanjack12.Population13.Settlement
