Investigation of the effect on 4MAT teaching model onthe student success in English course in 4th grade ofprimary school

This study aims at finding out the effect of 4MAT teaching model, which provides learning teaching environments in accordance with learning styles of all students in the classroom, on student success in the 4th grade English course of primary school. For this purpose, the activities in "Cartoon Characters", "My Day" and "Doing Experiment" units of the English Curriculum for the 4th grade primary school were organized according to the 4MAT teaching model and the effect of the 4MAT teaching model on student success was investigated. The effect of 4MAT teaching model on academic achievement was investigated using weak experimental method with pre-test and post-test control group. The research was implemented in a public school in Gaziantep city in 2016-2017 academic year. The total number of students is 60 as 17 boys and 13 girls in the experimental group, and 16 boys and 14 girls in the control group. The students selected as the experimental group were trained by activities based on the 4MAT teaching model. The students selected as the control group were trained by the activities included in the 4th grade primary school curriculum.The application was implemented to the experimental and control groups for 12 weeks as 24 lesson hours. The achievement test prepared by the researcher with the expert opinion of the Curriculum and Instruction field and the opinions of the two English teachers was applied to the students in the experimental and control groups. The achievement test was applied to groups before trainings and after trainings. The result of the research indicated that the experiment group students were trained by activities in accordance with 4MAT teaching model were more successful. In order to add depth to the research, the students of the experimental group were asked about the 4MAT teaching model. The answers given by the students reached the conclusion that they developed a positive attitude towards the English lesson and were satisfied with the application.
