The inspection of the science lesson teaching program and course book of the 5th classes in the context of STEM

In our today's World where the economical development determined by knowledge and technical innovations, it has become important to extend and make science and technology literate to everybody and furnish people with the needed skills of the 21st century. In this sense, the STEM approach, getting more important in the last years, effected the whole World; countries revised their education systems grounding on STEM. In our country the education programs and textbooks have been updated after the studies on STEM. In this research it has been aimed to get the teacher's opinions about the 2017 science lesson teaching program and 5th grades science textbook activities according to the STEM approach. The research has been designed in the converging paralel method out of the mixed method designs. The quantitative study group of the researcher consists of 161 science teachers working in Kütahya; the qualitative studying group consists of 10 science teachers. The data has been collected by the researcher with a "Teacher's views survey" and an interview form. In the first part of the survey there were questions about personal information and in the second part clauses targetting to reveal views about the program and the textbook activities after the STEM approach. The survey's part related to the program consists of five subdimensions; science, technology, engineering, mathematics and skills of the 21st century and 38 clauses, the views on the textbook activities consists of 17 clauses. The interview form consists of 7 question and sub questions. The quantitative data has been sorted out with frequency, percent, arithmetical average, standard deviation and the qualitative data with content analyses. The quantitative findings after the research show that the education program is supportive to STEM's science, technology, engineering, mathematics fields and giving the needed skills of the 21st century possibility to be gained; the textbook activities as well are prepared suitable for the STEM approach. The qualitative findings show that the steps for the program and the textbook activities on behalf of STEM are positive but not sufficient enough to be practicable fully.
