The evaluation of social studies textbooks for grade 5 according to the views of teachers (Tokat province)

The purpose of the study is to evaluate social studies textbook for grade 5 published by Bilnet Printing House in 2017-2018 educational-academic year according to the views of teachers and to determine the differentiation stage related to professional seniority, age, educational status, place of profession, and gender variables. Scanning model has been used in the study. The population of the study consists of 235 social studies teachers working in the province, districts and towns of Tokat in 2017-2018 educational-academic year. Simple, random sampling method has been used in the study and it has been conducted with 149 social studies teachers. The data of the study have been gathered according to the views of teachers on grade 5 social studies textbooks scale comprising to tally 45 it ems which consist of personal information, physical design, contents, visual design, language and expression, assessment an devaluation elements. The gathered data have been analysed with SPSS 22,0 package. Frequency, percentage, skewness, kurtosis, Standard deviation and t test and ANOVA test consisting of parametric tests have been applied to the analysis of the data. When the percent age and avarage of the views of the teachers on the physical design, visual design and language and expression characteristics and the element srelated to the assess mentan devaluation of grade 5 social studies textbooks, which are among the findings of the study are examined, the scores of "Sufficient" and "Fairly Sufficient" are found highly prominent. In the views of the teachers participating the study on the textbook, a meaningful difference has been observed in the physical design element related to prefessional seniority; a meaningful difference has been observed in the assessment an devaluation element related to gender; a meaningful difference has been observed in the physical design element related to age group; a meaningful difference has been observed in visual design element related to the place of profession. However, no meaningful difference has been observed in the examined elements related to educational status. On the basis of the findings of the study, the physical characteristics of grade 5 social studies textbook should be enhanced, visual design and learning domain should be connected and it is suggested that language and expression characteristics should be improved according to the age level and language competence of the student
