Analyzing theme and topic compatibility in the reading texts of the 5th grade Turkish course books in accordance with teachers' views

The Ministry of National Education has started to implement the New Turkish Language Curriculum as of 2018-2019 academic year. In this study, it is aimed to determine if the theme of the texts in the 5th grade Turkish textbooks prepared according to the new curriculum is compatible with the theme given in the textbooks, also to determine the clarity of the subject matter, the main emotion/main idea of the texts, and the difficulty that students may have in determining the subject and main emotion /main idea of these texts and thus to find out whether these texts are suitable to be included in textbooks. A total of eight texts were randomly chosen from each theme of the coursebook to be examined. The volunteer Turkish teachers to answer the questions about these texts were selected chosen from those who work in Erzincan. In this study, the data were analyzed according to the Miles-Huberman formula. The internal consistency of the analysis carried out according to the formula was VI determined. As the concepts of theme and main emotion/main idea are directly related to each other, questions related to the main emotion/main idea of the texts are included in the research questions. According to the research results, three of the texts included in the textbooks are not included under the correct theme in the textbook; main emotions/main ideas of two texts are not clear and students will have difficulty in understanding these texts due to various reasons. For these reasons, it is concluded that these 5 texts are not suitable for the 5th grade Turkish coursebook. The reasons why students have difficulty in determining the subject and the main emotion/main idea of the texts generally stem from the text. In addition, the concepts of theme and topic can occasionally be used interchangeably, and the distinctive features of these two concepts are not taken into account. There are similar situations in the 2018 Turkish Language Curriculum as well. In this study, some criticism and solution offers about the use of themes and topic words in the program are included.
