Metaphorical expressions in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade Turkish courses

Thought is the first action that creates the word. Concepts and ideas that are adesigned in mind are expressed through language. At this point, the concept of rhetoric, which forms the best and most accurate phraseology of the word, becomes prominent. Rhetoric plays an important role in turning the designed thought into a word in an esthetical way. In short, rhetoric is a literary area that puts the emphasis on ?how things are expressed? with different figures of speech and phrases rather than ?what is expressed?. Being one of the figures of speech that is frequently used by rhetoric, metaphor signifies using a word outside of its known meaning in the literature. Metaphor is used in adding value and depth of meaning to the word. By this way, the word is embellished with lustiness and beauty by using the facilities of rhetoric. Use of metaphor evokes a new meaning against the basic meanings of words. The perception of truth is interrupted by metaphor in expressions, which meet two meanings as real meaning and figurative meaning. Turkish language has an extensive meaning and expression richness with this style of use. This meaning and expression richness that is peculiar to Turkey could be learned not only in life, but also in the classroom with all styles of rules and usages based on texts in the Turkish school books that are the lesson materials, within the context of primary school Turkish lessons. This study will determine, categorize and evaluate the usage frequency of figurative expressions, which are involved in texts of primary school Turkish school books of 6th, 7th and 8th graders at the point of gaining lingual richness based on texts.
