Examination of 6 th and 7 th grode Turkish text books in terms of theme and literary genres

The aim of the study is to analyze the themes and texts about the themes in the Turkish coursebooks of 6th-7th grade in 2018-2019 school year in terms of literary genres. Coursebooks are the basic elements for curriculum in an education program. In this context, themes in these coursebooks, texts and genres of these texts gain value. The method of document review was used in this study. Themes in several coursebooks of 6th-7th grade from different publishing houses were analyzed. Moreover, genres of the texts in context of these themes were identified and these genres were compared by different publishing houses at the same grade level. In addition, an analysis on literary genres about common themes was provided. Themes and genres on these coursebooks from different publishing houses were compared to themes and genres taking part in the 2018 Turkish Course Curriculum. Reading texts from five different coursebooks were submitted to an analysis for five different Turkish teachers and text genres were identified. In this study, 6th grade coursebooks from Ministry of National Education and Eksen publishing houses were analyzed as well as 7th grade coursebooks from MonE and Dersdestek publishing houses. The analysis revealed that different genres were used at the same grade level by different publishing houses. Moreover, it was concluded that different genres were used in terms of genres on common themes. The study showed that especially some texts could not be identified correctly or texts were not given in a way that would reflect the characteristic of its genre. Moreover, it was observed that some text genres were often mistaken for each other. Moreover, it was shown that similar themes were used by different publishing houses in terms of themes analyzed. However, it was concluded that some texts were included in the coursebooks in a way that would not be appropriate to the theme it was attributed to. In light of all these results, it was revealed that selecting the themes and texts on these themes as well as identifying text genres should be conducted in a more careful manner and recommendations were made accordingly.
