Opinions of teacher parents with children in 6th and 7th grades about the teachers in their children's schools

Education is a long process that begins within the family at birth and continues in educational institutions. Throughout this process, the attitudes and behaviors of both parents and teachers have an important effect on the child. From the moment a child starts formal education, they become part of the school system. The quality of the institution which is attended, the teachers, and the collaboration between school and family are crucial for maximizing the efficiency of the educational process. In this study, the phenomenology method which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The study was conducted using a semi-structured interview technique, and the snowball and chain sampling methods were applied. The research examined the opinions of teachers who are also parents of 6th and 7th-grade students regarding the teachers at their children's schools. As a teacher, their positive and negative opinions about their children's teachers, their expectations from these teachers to be more beneficial, and the quality of their communication with them were investigated.The aim of the study is to determine the perspectives of teacher-parents on the teachers at their children's schools from both a professional and parental standpoint. The study was conducted in Düzce province during the 2023-2024 academic year, with the participation of ten teachers (seven women and three men) working in public schools. Descriptive and content analysis methods were used to analyze the data. The results of the study revealed that teacher-parents generally held negative views regarding the quality of homework assigned by their children's teachers, the teaching methods and techniques used, openness to opinions, suggestions, and criticism, and fairness. However, they expressed positive opinions about teacher-student relationships, fostering a love for school, extracurricular activities, reinforcement, and rewards. The data obtained from the interviews were examined and analyzed. The results were systematically shared with the readers. Based on the study's findings, it is recommended that educators within the education system engage in self-evaluation and self-regulation regarding the deficiencies identified in the research. Additionally, it is suggested that similar studies be conducted in different provinces and at different school levels.
