The effects of teaching with cooperative learning of unit of reproduction on livings on achievement in science lesson

This research has been made in order to evaluate the effect of cooperative learning on achievement and retention in Science and Technology teaching.In this research, pretest and postest experiment design with control groups has been applied. Totally 72 students who enrolled at 6A and 6B classes in Sanliurfa Central Siverek County Turkozu Primary School were included in this research during the first term of 2008-2009 educational year. Experiment and control groups have been choosen. 6A has been used as the control group and 6B has been used as the control group. In this research, ?Science Success Test? including 35 multiple choice questions have been used in order to gather data.The test has been used as pretest-postest- delayed postest. Independent and paired groups ?t? tests were used to analyze the data.Arithmetic score of experiment group at achievement pretest has been measured to be 10.56, arithmetic score of experiment achievement postest has been calculated to be 25.67 and statistically significant difference was found (p<0.05). Arithmetic score of control group achievement pretest has been measured to be 9.72, arithmetic score of experiment achievement postest has been determined as 22.39 and statistically significant difference was found (p<0.05). The achievement postest which has been made after the education, arithmetic score of experiment group has been measured to be 25.67, arithmetic score of control group has been calculated to be 22.39. A meaningful difference has been obtained in favour of experiment group at achievement postest which has been applied for control and experiment groups using independent ?t? test (p<0.05). After 8 weeks from the postest, the delayed postest has been made and arithmetic score of experiment group has been measured to be 18.92, arithmetic score of control group has been calculated to be 14.00. A meaningful difference has been obtained in favour of experiment group at achievement delayed postest which has been applied for control and experiment groups using independent ?t? test (p<0.05).As a result the study it was seen that jigsaw technique of cooperative learning approach has had positive effects on achievement and retention in Science and Technology teaching. In addition, it has been found that cooperative learning more effective on retention.
