Examination of literary works suggested in 6th grade social studies coursebook in terms of values in learning domains

Social values which have been attached more importance in recent years, have been gained to students with lots of methods. Literary works are also one of the effective and important instruments in gaining social values to the students. In this work,it is aimed to reveal what level of desirable values contain in 2018-2019 Education Term 6th Grade Social Studies Coursebook. Literary works suggested by the ministry of education constitue the population. Six books suggested in 2018-2019 6th grade social studies coursebook constitue reserch sample. The method used in this work is a phenomenological method of qualitative research methods. Content analysis method is used when data are analyzed in the research. After reading inspected books, the parts in which values are planned to be given learning domain are determined. Afterwards,these parts are analyzed in aspects of related values. The values and learning domains in 6th grade social studies coursebook are as below: The value of solidarity and helpfulness in the book 'Sol Ayağım' suggested in individual and society learning domain. The value of cultural heritage sensitivity in the books of 'Alparslan Çift Başlı Kartallar' and 'Peygamberimizin Hayatı' suggested in culture and heritage learning domain. The value of scientificness in the book 'Denizler Altında 20.000 Fersah' suggested in science technology and society learning domain. The values of patriotism, sensitivity and responsibility to natural environment in the book 'Başarı Öyküleri' suggested in production,distribution and consumption learning domains. Name of the book 'Çanakkale'nin Kadın Kahramanı Safiye Hüseyin' does not emphasize the value of "equality and reinforces inequality in implicit discourse by using a sexist language. However, the emphasis on ever Patriotism maktad is very common. This work doesn't make a suggestion in learning domains of people, places, environments and global connections. However, the values of the sensitivity to cultural heritage, the sensitivity to natural environment and patriotism are examined. As a result of analyses: It is concluded that the value of paying attention to family unity can be included besides the value of helpfulness and solidarity in the book 'Sol Ayağım'. It is concluded that in addition to value of the sensitivity of cultural heritage in the book 'Peygamberimizin Hayatı', self sacrifice, solidarity, helpfulness, respect, love, tolerance, being fair and honesty can be included. Findings belonging to value of sensitivity to cultural heritage take part in the book 'Alparslan Çift Başlı Kartallar'.In addition to this,the values of patriostism, helpfulness, solidarity, responsibility, respect,self sacrifice,tolerance,hospitality and independence can be gained to the students through this novel. The book of 'Denizler Altında 20.000 Fersah' can be used to give the value of scientificness.In the book of 'Başarı Öyküleri' findings belonging to the values of patriotism , sensitivity to natural environmet and responsibility in learning domain appear but these values aren't mentioned in all the stories of the book. 'Çanakkale's Heroine Safiye Hüseyin's book "eguality" value isn't emphasized so much. By using gender discourse she reinforces rather inequality in implicit discourse manner. But patriotism is emphasized too much. At the end of the work, we can say that the readability of books of 'Alparslan Çift Başlı Kartallar' and 'Peygamberimizin Hayatı' is at higher level for related age and grade,in both of the books, using unknown words and difficult language complicate internalisation of books and gaining related values by students. Besides,it is considered that with smooth content of books,plain language and word choice suitable for student level can be more effective in gaining these values. This work tries to reveal what extent effective in gaining to values of learning domain in literary works ,in suggested secondary school social studies coursebook.For this reason,this study is important for examining the effectiveness of using literary works in learning domain.
