The effect of 7th grade rational numbers with activity-based teaching materials on students' academic achievement and attitudes towards mathematics lesson

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of teaching 7th graderational numbers with activity-based teaching materials on students' academic achievement and attitudes towards mathematics lesson. In this study, a model with pre-test/post-test control group, one of the experimental models, was used. The research was conducted on a total of 46 students, 24 of which were experimental group and 22 in the control group, at the 7th grade of a state school in Ağrı/Tutak in the 2019-2020 academic year. In the study, there is an experimental group and a control group chosen by unbiased assignment. The results of the pretest have shown that the groups are equal in terms of academic success. The subject of rational numbers was taught with the activity-based teaching method with the students in the experimental group for 6 weeks, and the students in the control group with the traditional teaching method. Mathematics Achievement Test and Mathematics Attitude Scale were used as data collection tools in the study. The achievement test was developed by the researcher and applied to the students as a pre-test, post-test and retention test. In the study, an attitude scale was applied to the experimental group and control group students before and after the application. The data obtained were analyzed by SPSS statistical program. After analysing the results of the experimental group and control group, it was detected that the experimental group scored higher in the post test, but overall there were no significance statisctical differences. In addition, permament learning was determined in the experimental group as well as the control group. As a result of the analysis, it is seen that the activity-based teaching method has an important effect on increasing the academic success of the students. According to the results of there search, the teaching of the lessons with the activity-based teaching method increased the motivation of the students towards the lesson, the students participated in the lesson more actively with the activities applied, and it was observed that both their success and the irattitudes towards the mathematics lesson increased positively.
