Classification of the examples which take part in the mathematics coursebook of grade 8

The aim of this study is to classify the solved examples in the 8th grade textbook which is being taught in secondary schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in the 2021-2022 academic year. In this study, document examination method was used in qualitative design because it was aimed to classify the examples in mathematics coursebooks. The examples of the first four units in the coursebook were classified using the theoretical framework developed by Alkan (2016) in which the types of examples are classified. Frequency and percentage values were used for the findings obtained in the study. As a result of the research, 31.44% of the start up examples used in the first four units of the 8th grade mathematics coursebook were found to belong to the initial, 48.45% to the standard, 19.33% to the improving, 0.26% to the extreme example, 0.52% to the non-example, and 0% to the counter example category. In the 8th grade mathematics coursebook, in line with the findings obtained as a result of the classification of the examples belonging to the first four units, it was determined that standard examples were mostly used to explain the definitions and rules of the learning outcomes, definitions and rules of the learning areas within the scope of the mathematics curriculum and to show how this operational process is applied. Since mathematics is a course that progresses in a helical manner, it was determined that initial examples were used to remind, draw attention and create a substructure for recognition, and developmental examples were used to expand the perception created by the definition and to expand the boundaries of the concept by providing a relationship between subjects. In the 8th grade mathematics coursebook, it was found that examples with solutions included in the 8th grade mathematics textbook, extreme and out-of-example examples were used in small numbers, and counterexamples were not used at all.
