The effect of television programs on the story-type texts writed by 8th grade students

The variety of program types and the increase in the number of channels, the fact that it can be found in almost every home, have enabled television to protect its strong influence that has been going on for years today too. Children and young people, who are sometimes in front of the television together with their elders and sometimes alone, can also take part in the influence of television. This study aims to reveal the effects of television programs on students through texts which with free themes and narrative type written by students themselves. The research was conducted using the case study design. The study group was selected with easily accessible case sampling. In the 2019-2020 academic year, free writing activities were conducted with 72 students from 3 different classes in 8th grade at two different times, and then individual interviews were conducted with the students. Student writings were analyzed with descriptive and content analysis together with the data obtained from the interviews. As a result of the examinations, it has been seen that there are some effects of TV series, movies, cartoons, news, documentaries and sports programs in some student writings. The title, character, placespace, event elements in the texts are taken from television programs; It has also been concluded that the effects of event-based programs such as series, movies and cartoons are more pronounced. By looking at the events in the student texts written under the influence of television programs, it has been determined that television can have positive and negative effects on students, and that television programs can be used as a teaching tool in some other courses and Turkish lessons. With these results obtained in the research, some recommendations were made.
