Concept definitions and concept images that related to word types of 8th grade students

The terms concept definition and concept image were first used in the field of mathematics education literature in 1980 by Vinner and Hershkowitz in academic studies. Although studies have been carried out on various concepts in the field of Turkish teaching, these studies have not been in the dimension of concept image, and generally studies address misconceptions regarding some concepts in the field of grammar. A concept definition is entire of words that accurately and generally describe a concept without going into details. Concept image, which is used as a concept image in the related literature and preferred to be addressed as concept image in this study; that a concept evokes in the mind of the individual that all the mental images, visuals, operations, relations, processes and properties is the sum of the cognitive structrue including. A concept does not place in an individual's mind in a single way; Many conceptual elements such as of the related concept verbal expressions, visuals, sensations, attitudes, memories and associations are hosted in the mind. Therefore, while handling the subject, it may be more accurate to talk about various concept images rather than a single concept image. Since concept images are the sum of the entire cognitive structure, they may sometimes not fit the definition of the concept or even be completely wrong. In Turkish teaching, it is very important that the definitions and images of the concepts are correct and complete so that students can learn effectively. By looking at how students define related concepts and what concept images they have, deficiencies can be eliminated and mistakes can be corrected. From this point of view, in the study, 'How are the concept definitions and concept images of 8th grade students regarding word types?' question will be answered. The design of the study is descriptive design; the study is a qualitative research and the phenomenological method was used in this study. With open-ended questions, the concept definitions and concept images of secondary school 8th grade students about the subject of word types were asked and face-to-face interviews were conducted with those whose concept images were different from the other participants. In this study, expert and teacher opinions were taken to determine the concept area to be researched and what are the concepts that had difficulty while in grammar teaching were asked.
