Abstract (EN)

Objective: Congenital defects may occur in expectant mothers who take excessive amounts of external vitamin A supplements during pregnancy. The study was conducted to investigate whether vitamin B12, folic acid and L-carnitine contribute to these defects. Material and Methods: Within the scope of the study, 35 healthy Wistar albino female rats, 3-4 months old and weighing between 200 and 220 grams, and 7 male rats will be used. One male rat will be left in each group, and vaginal smears will be taken early the next morning and examined under a microscope. The spermatozoa will be examined and the rats in which spermatozoa are seen will be considered as the zeroth day of pregnancy. The weights of pregnant rats will be measured and medication will be administered for 21 days. Groups will be given B12, folic acid and L-carnitine along with vitamin A. At the end of the 21st day, the weights of all groups will be weighed and the newborns will be evaluated for congenital malformations. The abdomen of newborn rats will be opened and brain, liver and eye tissues will be removed. Results: While edema is observed in the interstitial area of the brain tissue; retinal detachment was observed in the eye tissue. Sinusoidal dilatations, cells with hyperchromatic nuclei, cells undergoing necrosis were observed in the liver tissue, and granules and vacuoles were observed in the liver epithelial cell cytoplasm. Conclusion: When the 6 groups given the drug were examined, the liver damage was not seen to be serious histologically. No significant difference was observed in the groups given vitamin B12, folic acid and L-carnitine compared to the group given high doses of vitamin A.
