Coating of AA-2024 aluminum alloy material with AL-B4C using hot press strapless sintering method

In recent years, it wants the vehicles and systems produced in order to use energy efficiently to be light and durable. Many coating and protection techniques have been used to improve the surface of AA-2024 aluminum alloy, which is used extensively in space, aviation and automotive technologies. In this study, the surface of AA-2024 aluminum alloy, which provides an excellent combination of strength and damage tolerance at high and cryogenic temperatures as substrate material, was coated with Al, B4C powders using hot pressed sintering method. In the applied coating method, the effects of B4C volume ratio and pressing pressure on the microstructure, macro hardness and wear resistance in the coating layer were investigated. In the examinations, OM and SEM images of the coating layer and cross-section microstructure, XRD and EDS analyzes were taken. In addition, the surface of the coating layer has been subjected to macro hardness and linear reciprocating wear tests. As a result of the study, it was observed that Al and B4C powders mixed homogeneously and established a good bond in OM and SEM images in hot pressing sintering method coating of AA-2024 aluminum alloy. It has been observed that the coating layer and the substrate are bonded to each other. It was determined that with the increase of B4C volume ratio in the Al-B4C coating layer, the macro hardness increased and the wear mass loss decreased.With the increase in the pressing pressure used in the coating process, it was observed that the micro voids between the powders in the microstructure decreased and became smaller, and it was determined that the macro hardness increased and the wear mass losses decreased. In addition, the coating of substrate materials by hot pressing sintering method has enabled the coating layer to be produced in the desired thickness.
