Abstract (EN)

When it is said that Border and preborder cities, this means the border areas which occurs on the northeran West and southern West distincts of Byzantium. It is tried to explain the dictionary and wording meaning of the cities on the Border and behind the border. While it has been mentioning the foundation of cities and the phases on the historical process, it has been explaining what these two phenomenon means for each other. Especially on the islamic geography, Sugûr and Avâsım cities have been occured in the term of Hulefa-i Raşid first time. We can see that the borders of the islamic state occurs on the Toros with Byzantium by the conquest movements of the islamic army out of the areas of Arabia. Some of these cities are Adana, Tarsus, Antakya, Malatya, Erzurum, Diyarbakır and Maraş which constituted the border cities of Emevi and Abbasid states and they have become important bases of their terms. During VIII. ve X. centuries, in the border and behind border cities, the lands owners have changed continously due to wars between these two states, therefore it is seen that the civil life has not been permanent in these areas. State of war has made mandatory to get ready of life to the war. The biggest part of this study consists of the demand of ruling Sugûr and Avâsim cities which are strategically important for both states (Abbasid-Byzantium), continuous wars, agreements after wars, prisoner exchanges, paid ransoms, the military buildings, roads, rivers, passageways. The study contains the explanatory information about the contribution of the cities of Abbasid Sugûr and Avâsim to the defence of the country in particular, what each countries own border cities means for themselves.
