The nature of the presentation of the occupation of Iraq by the USA in Hürriyet Journal

As is known, in 20th March 2003 United States of America and her allies (Britain, Spain) have occupied Iraq. In this study, our subject is the nature of presentation of this occupation which has been actualized with the intiative of the USA, in Hürriyet journal. For this research which has been prepared by setting out from theoretical approaches that have a critical look to the mass communication, the reason of choosing Hürriyet is that, during the period of war, it is the newspaper which has the highest circulation. Also it has a content that may represent the mainstream media. In this thesis three subjects were studied to each other. First historical-social-econemic-political context of the occupation of Iraq by the USA and form of the presentation of the war by USA government; the second one is connected to the social formation settled in, economical organizational structure and proffessional practicals, mainstream media?s being an ideological instrument that circulates the expession of political and economical centre; and the third one is that connected to the both of the previous subjects altogether constituting the main research subject of the thesis is the research of the nature of the presentation of the occupation of Iraq by the USA in Hürriyet from mainstream national media and testing whether Hürriyet has a structure which repeats the expression of the USA which is economical and political centre. In the scope of the study, written and visual narrations about the subject that appeared in Hürriyet between the dates-a day before the occupation of Iraq by the USA that is 19th March 2003 and a day after the capture of Baghdat -10th April 2003- have been studied. These written and visual narrations are evaluated by using critical text analysis and visual analysis techniques. Presentation of war, presentation of the armies of the sides, presentation of the governments of the sides, presentation of the anti-war movements, presentation of the journalists, and presentation of Turkey during the war period , the materials are determined as such headlines, and if it is seen necessary they have been categorized according to the quality of the materials and applied to both qualitative analysis or without categorizing merely evaluated by qualitative analysis. Essentially the study which has a certain emphasis on qualitative analysis; quantative data are used to support the qualitative analysis done. As a conclusion of the study, it is fixed that Hürriyet posits presentation that is parallel to the USA?s and repeats this dominant expression.
