Abstract (EN)

One of the most significant and revolutionary discoveries in world history has been the discovery of nuclear energy. The nuclear age, which is seen as a new era, was also ushered in by this kind of energy produced by splitting the atom. In the international system, states have consistently carried out their policies in a way that ensures their security, objectives, and interests. With the emergence of atomic energy, it was inevitable that states would want to produce nuclear weapons, the most terrible weapons in the world, under the name of using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Because many potentially dangerous physical assets are viewed as the main source of security. In particular, states within anarchic and dynamic structures like international relations believe that lethal nuclear weapons play a significant role as a deterrent in maintaining both national and international security. The existence and consequences of these weapons continue to be significant today. The United States of America became the first nation to manufacture and utilize atomic bombs when it dropped them on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, bringing an end to World War II and ushering in the nuclear era. The disaster caused hundreds of thousands of people to become vulnerable, and for the first time the world was introduced to the terrible effects of nuclear weapons that could destroy all living and non-living things. During the Cold War, a strict bipolar system was formed and nuclear weapons initiatives gained momentum, breaking the monopoly of the United States as the sole nuclear power. States have turned to nuclear weapons and have entered into a desire to become nuclear. Therefore, the increase in nuclear armament has reached serious dimensions. The most fundamental reason for this, which cannot be denied, has been the national security concerns of the states. Since it has spread and grown to be the system most significant issue, the race to become a nuclear power has altered the nature of the security phenomenon in the global context. The only solution to the insecurity created by the proliferation of nuclear weapons has made arms control and nuclear disarmament initiatives necessary. This study primarily attempts to explain what nuclear weapons are and what these weapons mean for the United States in the context of the Nuclear Posture Review reports published by the United States Department of Defense. Along with analyzing arms control and disarmament programs, the study also analyzes significant issues like deciding on nuclear weapons policies and strategies and the role that nuclear weapons should play in accordance with US interests and long-term objectives.
