Retrospective demographic analysis of forensic eye trauma patients between 18-65 years of age who applied to the emergency department

Purpose: The eye, which enables us to see, is an important organ protected by certain tissues and structures in the facial region, especially from impacts, foreign objects, chemicals, or trauma to the face. Occupational accidents and injuries are commonly associated with eye injuries in forensic cases. The aim of our study is to examine the retrospective demographic characteristics of forensic eye traumas among individuals aged 18-65. Method: The demographic characteristics obtained through the system of forensic eye cases presenting to our hospital's emergency department between [dates] were examined. Evaluation was conducted on the mechanism of trauma, time of trauma occurrence, gender, and age groups. Results: Our study included 282 patients with an average age of 34.06 ± 11.64 years. 82.6% of the patients were male. 20.6% of the traumas were reported as occupational accidents. The most common type of trauma was blunt injury (58.5%). Most of the patients presented to us from the provincial center (50.7%). The highest incidence of injuries was observed in spring (29.8%). The most common pathology associated with trauma was conjunctival hyperemia (46.8%). 48.9% of the patients were discharged on outpatient basis. The rate of requiring surgical treatment was determined as 19.5%. It was statistically significant that occupational accidents were more common in male patients compared to females (p=0.018). Conclusion: We believe that the use of necessary protective equipment and adherence to regulations, especially in workplaces, can reduce all potential negative outcomes, including eye injuries, particularly among male patients.
