Cholesterol screning of the patients with chest pain emergency department

2-ABSTRACTCHOLESTEROL SCREENİNG OF PATİENTS WHO PRESENT TO THEEMERGENCY DEPARTMENT WİTH CHEST PAİNApproximately 5 percent of all emergency department (ED) visits, are for chest pain, yetaccurate diagnosis remains a challange. Owing to a complex interplay of anatomic, physiologicand psychological factors, serious illness often mimics benign conditions.This study aimed cholesterol screening to facilitate the diagnose of cardiac chest pain, inadditional to EKG, CK, CK-MB, Troponin T, Troponin I.This prospective study was performed in Emergency Department of Fırat UniversityMedical School. The patients with chest pain who had a fasting (12 hr.) were included in thisstudy.An observational prospective study was performed on all patients admitted to ouremergency department from May 1, 2004 to October 30, 2004. This group comprised 79 womenand 125 males. Lipid leves of patients is compared NCEP ATP III decisions. İt was accepted160 mg/dl that are LDL levels, 240 mg/dl are total kolesterol levels, 40 mg/dl are HDL levels.Mean lipid levels of patients who had typical chest pain were determined 210,83±55,0mg/dl to mean total cholesterol, to mean LDL 174,83±90,3 mg/dl, to mean HDL 38,00±10,7mg/dl and mean lipid levels of patients who had atypical chest pain were determined200,29±58,8 mg/dl to mean total cholesterol, to mean LDL 153,79±74,4 mg/dl, to mean HDL41,60±11,1 mg/dl.It were determined that total cholesterol levels of the patients who had typical chest painwere higher than the patients who had atypical chest pain and HDL levels were lower thantheirs. .(p<0,05). It were determined significant differents that LDL levels of the group whowere older than 46 years between yonger than 46 years.(p<0,05). It were not determinedsignificant differents that LDL levels of the group who had typical chest pain between atypicalchest pain.We think that cholesterol screening is useful in emergency department in additional toother methods, as a result.Key words: chest pain, cholesterol screening, emergency department.
