Diagnostic value of ischemia modified albumin in emergency department patients presenting with convulzive seizure

OBJECTIVEOur purpose is to examine the diagnostic value of Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) in emergency department patients presenting with convulzive seizure.METHODForty seizure patients who came to Dokuz Eylül Hospital Adult ED and 40 control group patients were included in this study. `Case group? and "control group? blood samples' were taken at the point of entry (0 hour) and 4th hour. Then serum is separated and saved for IMA and albumin levels check. All data were recorded to data forms prepared for this study.RESULTS22 female (55%) and 18 male (45%) patients were in both case and control groups. Case and control group age averages were 45.10±21.94 (18-89) and 43.50±20.79 (17-84) respectively. Both groups have not a statistically meaningful difference in age averages (p=0,739)Out of 40 seizure patients, 37 patients had generalized seizures (92.5%) and the rest 3 patients had partial seizures (7.5%). In case group, the zero hour (time of admission) case group blood IMA levels were 61.5 IU/ml and in control group that value was 18.5 IU/ml (p=0.000). On 4th hour blood IMA levels were 56.66 IU/ml in case group, where in control group, blood IMA levels were 15.40 IU/ml (p=0.000).In case group, partial and generalized seizure patients? IMA level average values were 47.07 IU/ml and 62.30 IU/ml at time of admission and 45.93 and 57.52 in 4th hour samples. There were no statistically meaningful differences between IMA level averages according to seizure types (p=0.668 and p=0.740).In case and control groups, albumin/İMA level averages were 1555.28 IU/g and 462.45 IU/g at the time of admission and 1431.40 IU/g and 383.55 IU/g on 4th hour samples. There was a statistically meaningful difference between 0 and 4th hour albumin/IMA levels. (p=0,000 ve p=0,000 ).CONCLUSIONAccording to the results of our study, blood IMA levels were markedly higher in patients with convulsive seizure. In our study, we observed that levels of blood IMA has a quite high diagnostic value to exclude the diagnosis of seizure.Keywords; Epilepsy, Ischemia Modified Albumin, Emergency Department
