Analysis of epidemiological characteristics and cost of stroke cases referred to our emergency department

In our study, we investigated the epidemiological characteristics of stroke cases and examined the cost of a stroke event to the hospital. We investigated the factors of affecting cost. The study, Abant Izzet Baysal University Department of Emergency Medicine between 15.11.2016-15.11.2017 was done by retrospective diagnosis of patients with acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Age of all cases, gender, job, living area, educational level, autobiography, emergency service application period, complaints, physical examination findings at admission, findings of brain computed tomography, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, the type of stroke that gets diagnosed, the type of unit that hospitalized, type of treatment, length of hospitalization, how the ends of the illness, cost data were analyzed from hospital admission to discharged. The relationship between cost and the data was investigated. The mean age of the patients was 74.01 ± 12.87 years and 53,8% of the patients were female. There was no relationship between age and gender (p> 0.05). Most of the patients (46%) were living in the city center and 31,8% of the patients were housewives. In our study, 74,7% of the patients had ischemic stroke. The cost of hemorrhagic cases was significantly higher than the ischemic group (p <0.05). The mean duration of hospitalization was 15.28 ± 17.39 days and 70,3% of the patients were followed-up in the intensive care unit. 20.9% of the cases ended with death and there was no significant difference between the discharged group and death group in terms of cost (p> 0.05). In regression analysis, cost-affecting independent risk factor has been found the type of unit in hospitalization. Conclusion; Stroke type, having arrived with the patient's consciousness disorders, hospitalization unit, and the type of treatment has found as factors increasing the cost of stroke in order to reduce the cost, by increasing the quality of hospital service, the increase in normal room hospitalization should be made.
