Abstract (EN)

Introduction: Ileus is a condition characterised by the obstruction and cessation of intestinal passage due to an intrinsic or extrinsic factor.Ileus observed with mechanical and non-mechanical causes can lead to morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of patients' laboratory values, imaging techniques and clinical findings to facilitate accurate and prompt diagnosis, thereby reducing mortality and morbidity. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted by analysing patients who were diagnosed and treated in the Emergency Department of Akdeniz University Medical Faculty. Demographic data, vital signs, biochemical values, hospitalization-discharge conditions, outcomes and one-year mortality of patients aged 18 years and older who presented to the Emergency Department with a diagnosed of ileus by computed tomography during a six-month period were recorded and analysed. Results: A total of 210 patients were included in the study. 102 (50.7%) of the patients were male. The mean age of the patients was 58.72±17.45 years and 152 (75.6%) of them had a history of previous abdominal surgery. Of the patients, 51.7% were admitted to hospital for further management, while 2 (1%) patient died in the emergency department. In the regression analysis of patients for one-month mortality, the odds ratio was 1.92 for creatinine and 3.42 for lactate. These variables are statistically significant. In the analysis of one-year mortality, the odds ratio for creatinine was 2.08 and for lactate 1.83. Conclusions: Considering high creatinine and lactate levels as important determinants of mortality in patients diagnosed with ileus may make an additional contribution to patient evaluation.
