Evaluating the factors that affect the reaction of patient's relatives while giving the death new in emergency department

OBJECTIVE: The factors that affect the reaction of patient's relatives while giving the death new in emergency department was evaluated in present study by using control groups. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study was constructed by Emergency Department of Medicine School, Gaziantep University between May 2014 and February 2015. To evaluate the factors that affect the reaction of patient's relatives while giving the death, patients died and their relatives in ED of Gaziantep University was detected as group 1, and patients died and their relatives in Dr. Ersin Arslan and Şehitkamil State Hospitals were detected as group 2. SPSS Windows version 22,0 packet program was used for statistical analysis, and P<0.05 as accepted statistically significant FINDINGS: Every group included 100 patients. Of cases, 34%' was female, and 66% was male. Thrombosis was the most common (29.5%) disorders that caused death in both (p=0.002). The most common deaths (75.5%) were unexpected; but expected deaths were more common in university hospital (p=0.024). The information of the patients who had a possibility of death was given higher in group 1 (p=0.011). After hearing break news, the relatives in group 2 reacted much more (p=0.001). In university hospital the majority of information was given in resuscitation room by showing the patient (p=0.001). The relatives showed much more violence during CPR in group 2 (p=0.001). While hearing the break new 60% of relatives in group 1 reacted by crying. Relatives in group 2 showed more then one reaction (p=0.001). CONCLUSION: The ratio of witnessed arrest, giving information to the relatives just before death, showing the patients to their relatives in resuscitation room while continuing the CPR was higher. The relatives' reactions against break news were more common in states hospitals.
