The analysis of the epidemiological and clinical features, treatment results, prognostic factors in the cases with open globe injuries

In this study, the purpose is to analyze the epidemiological and clinical features, treatment results and prognostic factors in the cases admitted with ocular trauma with open globe injury (OGI) whose the primary repair, follow-up and secondary surgeries are performed in our clinic. Between January 2009 and January 2012, 237 patients applied our clinic with OGI. Their primary and secondary reconstruction, and medical treatment were done in our clinic. The 237 eyes of these 237 patients having at least 4 month follow-up were examined retrospectively. Average age was 24.6 (1-84 years) and the average follow-up period was 12.1 (4-36) months, respectively. Trauma develops most frequently in males (74.7%) and it affects most frequently the cases between the ages of 0 and 16 (48.1%) . Game crashes (36.3%) were observed as the most common cause of trauma, and these traumas were most frequently happened at home (34.2%). The final visual acuity (SSI) of the cases in the OTS study group were found to be compatible with OTS categories. In the cases with OGI, factors having a negative effect on visual prognosis in patients were determined such as the type of the trauma, its placement on the globe, low initial visual acuity (BGK), hyphema, vitreous prolabsusu, vitreous hemorrhage (VIH), retinal detachment (RD), proliferative vitroretinopati (PVR) respectively. Factors having a negative effect on the anatomical success were found to be as the type of the trauma, its placement on the globe , VIH, RD and PVR, respectively. As a result, ocular trauma is more common in men than in women, and it is more frequent in children than in adults. When all patients were evaluated, 81.9% of all cases had anatomical success and 57.4% of them were found to be functionally successful.Key Words: Open globe injury, Retina detachment, PVR
