Abstract (EN)

Body fluids provide a vital environment in which metabolic reactions take place and all nutrients are transported in the organism. Body fluids consist of intracellular and extracellular fluids separated by the cell membrane. The main function of the extracellular fluid is to provide a suitable environment for the nutrients, electrolytes and waste products of the cell. Normal Na value is between 135 and 145 mEq/L. Excessive fluid intake and sodium loss cause hyponatremia. Hyponatremia causes clinical symptoms such as headache, anxiety, fatigue, cramps, hypotension, cardiovascular collapse and coma. Patients that were admitted to Dokuz Eylul University Cardiovascular Surgery department between February 2014 and February 2015 and undergone open heart surgery are included in our study. Transplant patients, asist device - artificial heart implant patients and chronic renal failure patients that take hemodialysis are not included in the study. Patients are divided in two groups according to their serum sodium levels before surgery. These two groups are evaluated for intubation time, intensive care unit time, inotropic medicine use, complications, and change in left ventricular EF, mortality, ecmo use, intra-aortic balloon counter pulsation use, cardiopulmonary bypass time and cross clamp time. We determined no effect of hyponatremia on postop EF change. There is no significant difference between NYHA classes of the patients compared. İn the hyponatremia group postop intubation time, use of blood products and postop amount of drainage is significantly high. Hyponatremia patients have a higher rate of acute renal failure and the mortality in these patients is significantly high. Based on these data it is agreed that preoperative hyponatremia has prognostic significance
