Investigation of the applicability of open source architectural system in Türkiye

Structures and the construction methods that constitute them have undergone continuous change and progress together with the advancement of technology and science throughout history. The construction techniques of each era have emerged as a result of quests driven by needs, shaped by culture, climate, and geography. Nations have developed construction technologies and built structures reflecting their cultures and inspirations from their geographical locations and histories. However, post-industrial revolution globalization has reduced production methods based on climate and culture, leading to similarities in construction technologies among countries. The situation resulting from increasing population and globalization has not only brought about technological similarities but has also presented numerous challenges and solution approaches in construction. One of these approaches is the "Open Source" model, a term that is practically used in software but has also started to be employed in the field of architecture. This model, pioneered by Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux operating system, involves combining prefabrication and various technologies to produce structures with high performance, low labor and energy costs, adaptability to different regions, and flexibility. According to this model, the 'do-it-yourself' (DIY) and peer-to-peer (P2P) design and production approach become crucial keys, especially in developing countries like Türkiye, for reshaping the construction industry. This study aims to uncover the applicability of the "Open Source" model in the construction sector in Türkiye and the benefits it can bring. The focus of the research is to examine whether the open-source construction production model can offer a practical and economic solution for the construction sector in Türkiye. In this regard, the study sheds light on addressing this issue through a technological architectural model to meet the housing/structural needs in Türkiye. The study utilizes data from open-source models such as Wikihouse and others, conducts and evaluates a survey covering the field of construction production practices in Türkiye. The conclusion of the study presents the advantages and disadvantages of open-source architecture, providing insights for Türkiye based on the findings.
