Material implementation and evaluation research to increase the effectiveness of open and distance English teaching: Sample of open education system Anadolu University

In the first quarter of the 21st century, the rapid development of information and communication technologies and innovative educational practices around the world are changing the way of learning and teaching. Many formal and distance education institutions have tried to keep up with these changes and adapted the requirements of this century to their education programs. Anadolu University, which is among the mega universities today, has been providing education services in the field of open and distance learning since 1982 and has introduced reform-like developments and innovations in digitalization. In the Open Education System, approximately 800 thousand different materials are produced for mass education given to more than 1 million students in 60 different undergraduate and associate degree programs. Since a mass education is provided in the Open Education System, the system provides learning opportunities with a more holistic approach. However, it can be mentioned that this material diversity should also be provided on a field basis. The aim of this study is to identify, apply and evaluate online best practice examples in order to increase the effectiveness of English language teaching in Anadolu University Open Education System. For this purpose, a seven-stage research was carried out. In the study, which was designed with a multi-stage mixed method; best practice examples were determined in line with needs analysis, literature review and field experts' opinions. In the post-implementation evaluation process, e-learning intrinsic motivation and satisfaction scales were used. Then, focus group interviews were held in order to obtain in-depth information. The findings obtained within the scope of the study show that the participants' e-learning intrinsic motivation and satisfaction with the presented platform and materials are high. At the end of the research, suggestions were presented to learners, educational institutions and researchers.
