Metaphor analysis in the context of open and distance learning support services

In this study, the metaphorical perceptions of learners enrolled in the Open Education System towards support services were examined. In the qualitative phase of the study, which was designed as an exploratory sequential mixed method research, the Metaphor Analysis Data Collection Form was used, and the metaphors obtained from 545 learners were listed with the help of language experts under the categories of "light", "water", "first aid", "equipment", "living" and "institutional" resources. Using the metaphor categories obtained, an Attitude Survey Towards Metaphor Categories was created. Within the scope of validity and reliability studies, a survey form consisting of six 7-point Likert type items was developed with the help of field and language experts. In the quantitative phase, data was collected from 411 learners enrolled in the Open Education System using this survey. In addition to descriptive analyses, quantitative data were analysed with t-test and one-way ANOVA to test whether there were differences in participants' attitudes according to their demographic information. It was determined that there was no difference in the attitudes of the learners towards the metaphor categories obtained in terms of gender, educational background and ICT use level. It was revealed that the level of awareness of support services and the level of utilization of services significantly differentiate attitudes towards metaphor categories. It can be suggested that this study will contribute significantly to the planning, design and implementation of support services to be developed within the scope of ODL.
