Expert and learner views on educational videos in open and distance learning

One of the materials frequently preferred by learners in open and distance learning is educational videos. It is one of the materials that contains audiovisual elements in educational videos and that enables more realization of learning by addressing multiple senses at the same time. In the design of educational videos; Multimedia learning theory, in terms of organizing the structure for the use of audiovisual elements together, cognitive load theory also provides significant contributions in terms of design and production for video and multimedia design for open and flexible learning in order to regulate the information load for the desired level of learning. In this context, the aim of the research is to determine the opinions of experts and learners about educational videos and types, and to reveal how the designs of educational videos should be evaluated by evaluating the findings and results within the framework of video and multimedia design for multimedia theory, cognitive load theory and open and flexible learning. In the context of the research purpose, semi-structured interviews were made with experts in the field of open and distance learning, and focus group interviews were held with open and distance learners. In the study, the holistic state pattern of the case study was preferred. As a result of the research, educational videos are an important material in open and distance learning; there are factors that restrict the making of educational videos better; improvement and renewal of designs; creation of expert staff; use of current technological facilities; improving and enhancing audiovisual designs; creating designs suitable for the course contents; consideration of target audience characteristics; increasing interaction; it is concluded that designs suitable for broadcast environments should be made. In this context, it is determined that the results are similar and in line with the principles of video and multimedia design for multimedia learning, cognitive load, and open and flexible learning.
