Comparison of the effects of resveratrol and ozonized olive oil in open wound healing: An experimental model of rat

Abstract (EN)

Objective: In this study, the effectiveness of resveratrol (RSV) and ozonated olive oil in open wound healing was evaluated comparatively in terms of clinical, histopathological and statistical aspects on an experimental rat model. Materials and Methods: A total of 24 Spraque Dawley rats were subjected to bilateral 6 mm diameter wounds on the dorsal skin using punch biopsy. The rats were divided into two groups of 12 animals each, RSV and ozonated olive oil. Topical medication (RSV and ozonated olive oil) was applied to one of the wounds created on the same animal, while the other was left as a control. Wounds were photographed on days 0, 3, 5, 7, and 11 to evaluate wound surface areas. For histopathological examination, 6 animals from each group were sacrificed on days 7 and 11, and tissue samples were taken from the region for histopathological examination. Results: In macroscopic evaluation, the wound surface area of the RSV group was recorded as smaller on days 3 and 5. In the comparison of histopathological scores of RSV and Ozonated Olive Oil on day 11, the epithelial regeneration score was found to be statistically significantly higher in the RSV group (p<0.05). In the comparison of the drug groups with their own control groups, the epithelial regeneration score of the RSV group was found to be statistically significantly higher (p<0.05) and the ulcer-necrosis score was found to be statistically significantly lower (p<0.05) than the control group on day 7. In the comparison of the ozone group with its own control group, the epithelial regeneration score of the ozone group was statistically significantly higher (p<0.05) and the vascular proliferation score was lower (p<0.05) on day 7. On day 11, the vascular proliferation score was recorded to be statistically significantly higher (p<0.05) than the control group. Conclusion: Both applied local agents were superior to the control groups at certain periods of wound healing. Therefore, both can be considered as options for wound treatment. However, RSV was found to be more effective in accelerating wound healing because it did not cause any irritation during application and had a higher epithelial regeneration score than ozone.
