Investigation of acute phase proteins and adiponectin levels in horticultural rats

Today, a considerable amount of human population dies due to hunger and it's effects on human body. Acute phase protein (AFP) is the protein synthesized from the liver in response to the inflammation. Concentrarions of AFP provide diagnostic and prognostic information since they are associated with the severity of the problem and the magnitude of the tissue damage. Adiponectin is considered to be a very important cytokine synthesized from fat tissue. Adiponectin has antiatherogenic and antiinflammatory effects. The studies related with the effect of the duration and severity of hunger on human body are limited. In this study, the effect of hunger on some acute phase proteins like C-reactive protein, Hp, albumin, ceruloplasmin and adiponectin synthesized from adipose tissue was studied on the hunger state constituted rats. Study was done in Adnan Menderes University Veterinary Faculty Experimental Animal Unit. In this study, 20 adult female Wistar type rats weighing 250-300 grams were used. Ten rats were randomly sampled while the control and experiment groups were being created. The rats in the experimental group were given only water for two days. The rats in control group continued to be fed regularly. Serum levels of CRP, Hp, albumin, ceruloplasmin, adiponectin, cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, AST, ALT, GGT, glucose and urea were measured by appropriate methods in serum samples taken at the end of two days. The results were evaluated statistically. According to the results of the analysis significant decrease in albumin, total protein, triglyceride, glucose and ALT levels were observed in fasting group. Statistically insignificant decrease in CRP and Hp levels which are AFP was observed , whereas a statistically insignificant increase in the group of hunger was observed in ceruloplasmin levels. There was a statistically insignificant increase in adiponectin and cholesterol levels and a statistically insignificant decrease in GGT levels. Statistically significant increases in urea and AST levels were observed. Although the levels of positive AFP's did not show significant changes in the case of acute hunger, a decrease in albumin level was detected from negative AFP's. The tendency to increase in adiponectin level is also one of the results obtained from the study. We conclude that the results of this study in which we studied the physiological and biochemical effects of starvation, on human and animals various social psychological and organic reasons, can be used as reference for future studies.
