Prevalence of depressive symptoms in women between ages 15-49 in the province of Adana havutlu and effecting factors

Purpose: The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of depressive symptoms and also was to determine relationships among characteristics of socio-demographic, socioeconomic and socio-cultural with symptoms of depression in women aged 15-49 living in the province of Adana Havutlu.Materials and Methods: This study was planned to determine the factors affecting the frequency of depressive symptoms in women 15-49 years of age at Havutlu Family Health Center. This study was cross-sectional, descriptive study. Study was performed face to face by the researcher with a simple method of randomly in 403 women selected from ETF. Beck Depression Inventory and questionnaire including socio-demographic and socio-economic, life events was applied to participants between 06.01.2010-12.30.2010.Results: The proportion of women indicating significant depressive symptoms was 30.3 % in this study. Chi-square analysis of variables that significantly correlated with depressive symptoms were evaluated with logistic regression model. Physical violence, pressure and lack of interest of parents in adolescence, chronic patient care requirement, being widowed or divorced, non-sexual relationship with her husband to be bad that increase the level of depressive symptoms was determined to be significant independent variables.Conclusion: According to the results of this study, low education and socio-economic level, less participation in social and cultural activities, family and marital relations to be problematic leads to an increase in depressive symptoms in women.Key Words: Women aged 15-49, depressive symptoms and effective factors.
