The survey study of seafood consumption in Adana and Mersin cities

Abstract (EN)
It was aimed to find out the fish consumption habits of people living in the cities of Mersin and Adana, as weel as socio-economic factors affecting fish consumption. Within the scope of the research, face to face survey was conducted with a total of 1000 people, 500 people from Mersin and 500 people from Adana. Consumers (92%) who participated in the survey consume seafood, while only 8% do not consume seafood. Although the general reason that the respondents did not consume fish is sensivity towards the taste and smell, only 1% do not eat fish due to allergic reason. The study, questionnaire was used to determine the factors that affect a families consumption of fish and seafood 35,9% of the survey participants were women, 64,1% men, the average age was 33 and the average monthly income is 2555TL. According to the result of the research, the majority of consumers eat fish once month (38.8%). The average consumption of fish is 0.666 kg/month and 8 kg per year. The most consumed fish species are sea bass (40%) and anchovies. (17%) while mussel (31%) is the most consumed seafood. Consumers (56%) usually buy fish and other seafood from fishmongers.
