ABSTRACT MSC THESIS POLLUTING EFFECT OF LEACHATE FROM ADANA SOFULU INAPPROPRIATE SOLID WASTE LANDFILL AREA ON THE SURFACE AND GROUND WATER MEHMET TÜRKMENO?LU DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY INSTITUTE OF NATURAL AND APPLIED SCIENCES UNIVERSITY OF ÇUKUROVA Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Hunay EVLİYA Year: 2002, Page: 87 Jury : Prof. Dr. Hunay EVLİYA Prof. Dr. Mesut ANIL Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şermin GÜL Municipal Solid Waste Landfills are one of the important sources which causes environmental pollutioa Adana has the problem of inappropriate solid waste management as in other metropolitan cities in Turkey. Some rehabilatation measures, drainage of the leachate and clean water, gas removing facilities, recirculating the leachate, water quality analysis, compost quality analysis and the soil coverage, had been realized in Sofulu waste damping area by the cooperation of Adana Metropolitan Municipality, JICA and Çukurova University. In this paper, the probable effects of the leachate produced from the Adana Sofulu site on the surface and ground water have been investigated. During the first six months in the year 2000; leachate, surface and well water samples which were taken around and in the vicinity of the area have been analysed in terms of their polluting parameters. Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biological Oxygen Demand, nitrate, nitrite, phosphorous and heavy metal analysis results have been used to investigate the existance of pollution originating from the solid waste landfill site. Key Words: Solid Waste, Leachate, Water Pollition, Waste Damping Area II
