The relationship between dietary inflammatory index, eatingbehaviour and obesity in adolescents

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the food consumption of adolescents and to determine the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII), eating behaviors and obesity. The research was conducted in 2022 with a total of 141 (75 female, 66 male) adolescents, who applied to Kayseri Melikgazi Hospital Nutrition and Diet Polyclinic. In the study, sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, eating behaviors and three-day food consumption records of individuals were examined and DII scores were calculated. The "Adolescent Eating Behavior Scale" (AEBS), which was developed by Özdoğan, Y. and includes 58 eating behavior statements, was used. The average age of the individuals was 13,0±2,1 years. According to the body mass index (BMI) z score classification, 19,9% were obese. DII scores were evaluated by dividing into quartiles. Minimum score was "-7,14" and maximum score was "+7,71", with an average of 1,9 ± 3,05. The average of AEBS scores was 324,3 ± 63,5. According to the AEBS scores, 27,6% of the individuals were classified as moderate, 66,7% as good and 5,7% as very good. No significant difference was found according to gender in DII and AEBS scores (p>0.05). According to DII quartiles, anthropometric measurements and eating scale scores of individuals were similar (p>0.05) There was a negative and significant correlation between DII with energy, carbohydrate, protein, fat, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, folic acid and calcium intakes. (r=-0,433, -0,411, -0,267, -0,370, -0,711, -0,432, -0,370, -0,680, -0,649 ve -0,267, p≤0,001, respectively) There was a positive and significant correlation between eating scale scores with vitamin A and D intakes (r=0,226 and 0,189, p<0,05, respectively). In addition, there is a positive correlation between the eating scale scores of the individuals and their body fat percentage (r=0.171, p<0.05). In conclusion; no significant relationship was found between DII scores with eating scale scores and BMI values among adolescents. There are correlations between DII and eating scale scores and energy and nutrient intakes. It is suggested that getting requirements of adolescents and consuming antiinflammatory nutrients will support their growth and development and the prevention of chronic diseases associated with inflammation.
