The effect of social media addiction on insomnia and aggression in adolescents

Özet (EN)

Aim: This study is designed to investigate the impact of adolescents' social media addiction on insomnia and aggression. Material and Method: The research was conducted in a cross-sectional manner. The study was carried out between October 2023 and February 2025. The research population consisted of 2057 adolescents from five high schools in the Ahlat district, connected to the center of Bitlis province. The study's sample size was determined to be 768 adolescents based on power analysis methods, with a 95% confidence interval, a 0.05 margin of error, a 0.25 effect size, and a 0.95 population representation power. The Personal Information Form developed by the researcher, the Bergen Insomnia Scale, the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and the Kar-Ya Aggression Scale were used for data collection. The data analysis was performed using the SPSS 21.0 software package. Descriptive statistics, percentage distribution, and regression analyses were applied during the evaluation process. Results: In the study, the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale score was found to be 16.24±5.82, the Bergen Insomnia Scale score was 20.47±10.05, and the Kar-Ya Aggression Scale score was 57.38±17.95. It was determined that adolescents' social media addiction had an effect of 26.2% on the level of insomnia. Additionally, it was found that social media addiction and sociodemographic characteristics had an effect of 31.3% on the level of insomnia. Furthermore, it was determined that adolescents' social media addiction had an effect of 18.5% on the Kar-Ya aggression status, and social media addiction along with sociodemographic characteristics, had an effect of 23.1% on the Kar Ya aggression status. Conclusion: According to this study, it has been observed that as social media addiction increases among adolescents, there is a corresponding increase in insomnia, aggression, and the subdimensions of aggression, including physical aggression, verbal aggression, anger, and hostility.
