Abstract (EN)
This study examines Afiyet Gazetesi, which was published weekly between 26 Teşrin-i evvel 1329 (8 November 1913) and 24 Kanun-i Sani 1330 (6 February 1915). Afiyet Gazetesi is one of the significant health publications in the Ottoman press. Distinguishing itself from other health publications of its time, it officially assumed the role of a family physician, aiming to provide remedies for all its readers' ailments. In addition to its informative content, the newspaper entertained its readers with riddles and jokes. Afiyet Gazetesi provided a broad perspective, covering almost every topic except for politics and religion. While primarily focusing on health and nutrition, it offered a wide range of content including humor, riddles, home economics, trade, fashion, beauty, household chores, practical information, recipes, healthy eating, and scientific knowledge. Thanks to this extensive content, it managed to keep its readership actively engaged. The aim of this study is to focus on the health-oriented content of Afiyet Gazetesi, published during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, and provide comprehensive information about the health developments and significant data of that period. Our goal is to guide readers with current health information of that era for a healthy lifestyle. The research scope consists of 62 issues of Afiyet Gazetesi published between 1913 and 1915. All health, scientific, and healthy eating data in the newspaper have been examined. In order to make it easier for readers to understand, their translations into contemporary Turkish have been provided alongside their transcriptions. It has been observed that all issues of the newspaper, starting from its first issue, are complementary to the statement 'A sound mind resides in a sound body,' which was featured in its first edition.
